December 10th marks the International day of Human Rights
“Our rights should never take second place to profit or power. When we protect the most vulnerable, when we refuse to look away, when we speak up for the institutions that speak up for us, we keep human rights alive” -Secretary General of the UN, Antonio Guterres
This year, UNA-BC has selected Ana Silvia Avendaño-Curiel as recipient of the 2025 International Human Rights award.
Ana Silvia is honored with the International Human Rights Award for her
tireless dedication to embedding equity, dignity, and inclusion into civic life. Through her
leadership in Boulder’s Community Connectors-in-Residence program, her advocacy for
immigrant and LGBTQ+ communities, and her commitment to centering underrepresented
voices in policy and governance, she has strengthened human rights at the local level. Her
work - rooted in her own journey as an immigrant from Mexico and expressed through both
policy and the healing power of dance - exemplifies the enduring principles of the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights, advancing dignity, equity, and justice from the ground up.
